We define young remount horse as a horse between 12 and 36 months of age based on its actual foaling date, not in calendar years. However, the training year for a young remount horse that was born in winter or spring starts not on a New Year Day, January 1st, its adjusted birthday, but 8 months later, in September of its second year of life. This training stage lasts for 2 years.

Old remount horse is a horse of its forth and fifth year of life (from 37th month to 60th). However, the training year for an old remount horse that was born in winter starts not on a New Year Day, January 1st, its adjusted birthday, but 4 months earlier, in September of its fourth year of life. This training stage follows the young remount horse stage and also lasts for 2 years.

Specialization

Specialization should really begin when a horse hits its first day of a 6 y.o. birthday, i.e. 60 months old, and has been trained properly and holistically for the previous 4 years: 2 years as young remount horse, and another 2 years as an old remount horse. The developing horse stage with specialization in an equestrian discipline latsts for 4 years. Upon successful completion of this training stage a horse may present itself as a schoolmaster.
